Volunteers Feed Hundreds of Kenosha Families in Powerful Stand Against Hunger

A collaborative effort in the Uptown neighborhood provided essential resources to over 1,600 residents, highlighting the growing issue of food insecurity in the community.

A remarkable act of community support unfolded in Kenosha's Uptown neighborhood this week.

Volunteers feed hundreds of Kenosha families, distributing 400 complete family kits packed with food, fresh produce, and daily necessities.

This massive undertaking was a united front against local hunger, organized by several key community partners.

The coalition included Niagara Bottling, Feed the Children, the ELCA Outreach Center, and the Disaster Response Team.

Each kit was thoughtfully designed to sustain a family of four, effectively reaching more than 1,600 individuals facing hardship.

The event casts a harsh light on the economic realities gripping the area.

Recent data indicates that nearly 14% of Kenosha residents are living below the poverty line, a challenge magnified by the rising costs of living.

Organizers stressed that escalating prices for housing, food, and energy are putting immense pressure on local families.

Sonya Rangel of the Disaster Response Team, who grew up in the neighborhood, spoke about the challenge of "food deserts" in Kenosha.

"It’s really hard to get an event this size or a significant amount of resources into these food deserts," she explained.

The gratitude from families was palpable and served as a powerful motivator.

Corporate partners also emphasized their local commitment.

Elvia Strutzel with Niagara Bottling described the initiative as central to their mission, stating, "This is where we live, where we work, where our kids go to school, so it’s important for us to give back."

For the ELCA Outreach Center, the scale of the distribution was a new milestone.

Mary Zorn of the center noted the increasing cry for help across the city.

"Food for 400 families, that’s just amazing because there’s such need in our area and that need just seems to be increasing," Zorn said.

She issued a heartfelt call to action for more community involvement.

"I know that not everybody can serve in different ways, but if you can, I hope that you do because there is a need," she urged.

Inspired by the event's success, organizers are hopeful about hosting more large-scale distributions to continue their fight against hunger in Kenosha.
